ECKER and GIARAMITA HONORED BY ECWC
Story and pictures by Ithaca Athletics and Cortland Athletics
Senior Seth Ecker (Pottstown, Pa.) of Ithaca and freshman Joey Giaramita (Elwood) of Cortland have been named Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference (ECWC) Wrestler of the Year and Rookie of the Year, respectively, in voting by the league’s coaches and sports information directors. Ecker repeated as NCAA champion at 133 pounds and Giaramita placed eighth at heavyweight.
A unanimous winner for the second year in a row, Ecker becomes the first repeat winner of the ECWC’s Wrestler of the Year award (he was the 2009 ECWC Rookie of the Year). He became the Bombers’ first two-time NCAA champion, winning the 133-pound title. Seeded first at nationals, he shut out three of his four opponents – including an 8-0 major decision in the title bout – and pinned the fourth. The pin in the semifinals was the 34th of Ecker's career; he went 30-4 this season with a career record of 108-20. He's ninth all-time in wins at Ithaca.
Giaramita, the first Red Dragon wrestler to win ECWC Rookie of the Year, earned all-America honors with an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. He entered nationals unseeded and completed the season with a 24-11 record.
The Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference is made up of Brockport, Cortland, Ithaca, Lycoming, Messiah, Oneonta, Oswego and Rochester Institute of Technology.
Despite Penn State's team victory in St. Louis, Missouri, Cornell had a stellar performance at the Div. I NCAAs last weekend. Kyle Dake, wrestling at the 157 lbs. weight class, won his third consecutive national championship. His accomplishment was especially impressive given Dake's transition from the 149 lbs., and previously 141 lbs., weight class. No other grappler in American history had ever won three consecutive titles in three different weight classes.
Below is the list of All-Americans from NYS wrestling programs.
Kyle Dake (Cornell, 157 lbs.) - 1st place
Steve Bosak (Cornell, 184 lbs.) - 1st place
Cam Simaz (Cornell, ) - 1st place
Frank Perrelli (Cornell, 125 lbs.) - 4th place
Mike Nevinger (Cornell, 141 lbs.) - 7th place
Donnie Vinson (Binghamton, 149 lbs.) - 3rd place
Nick Gwiazdowski (Binghamton, HWT) - 8th place
Justin Accordino (Hofstra, 149 lbs.) - 6th place
Steve Bonanno (Hofstra, 125 lbs.) - 8th place
Congratulations to all!
