CORNELL’S TRUE FRESHMAN DAKE WINS NCAA TITLE

Finishing up an impressive season, Cornell’s Kyle Dake became one of the few true-freshmen to win an NCAA Division 1 title.  Coming in as the one seed, Dake racked up three impressive victories, including a 11-0 major decision over the nine seed Levi Jones of Boise State, before meeting Reece Humphrey, the fourth seed from Ohio State, in the semi-finals.  Despite losing the first takedown and almost giving up back points, Dake was able to rally back to tie the match and send the match into overtime.  Neither wrestler was able to secure a takedown in the one-minute, sudden victory period sending the match into a tiebreaker where Dake was able to secure an escape and win the match.  In the finals, Dake met Montell Marion, the sixth seed from Iowa.  Once again the freshman put on a stellar performance to earn a 7-3 victory, as well as the national championship; becoming the first true freshman to win a title since Dustin Schlatter from Minnesota won in 2006.  Finishing the season at 34-2 with his last loss coming in December, Kyle Dake has set himself up for what could be a stellar colligate career.
