Steve Leslie entered Colgate from Goshen High School and soon made the decision to forgo football to pursue wrestling as his collegiate athletic endeavor -and pursue it he did! Capturing three state titles in four years -only the second collegiate wrestler ever to do so- he became the only Colgate wrestler ever to win an Eastern wrestling crown. His Colgate career mark of 76 wins, 20 loses and two ties also remains and individual four-year record for any Colgate wrestler regardless of weight class. Prior to that famous Eastern win, Steve was bed-ridden with a lingering virus. Rather than forfeit the match -in his own words, "I could not lie in bed saying, I could've, would've, should've." He made that extra effort (his trademark during four years of wrestling) and went on to the matches, winning the Eastern crown. After his last wrestling match, Steve graduated and left Colgate to fulfill one more dream- to enter the Marine Corps and fly. He became a helicopter pilot with the radio call of "The Hook." It was in this capacity that he answered the oil tankers in the Persian Gulf. It was his last "match" and one from which he failed to return.
